You Should Write in 1st Person
Posted by: Yordle Sandwich - 07-19-2017, 07:09 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (6)

Have you ever been reading through something that you wrote, maybe years ago, and completely forgot about, when you catch yourself by surprise and catch yourself laughing aloud, because past you really was rather funny?

Sometimes when I'm bored I read through things that I wrote or read on this site years ago, curious as to what I think about them now, and yes, it does invoketh much cringe. Verily. But I also catch things that I missed. Mostly I catch jokes.

It surprises me, sometimes, the jokes that we weave into our narratives. Little, throwaway jokes, puns, words that in retrospect were most probably used sardonically, distractions, if anything, from the serious, oft heavy topics on hand.

But what surprises me more than that they exist is how few of them I catch on the first read through.

Everyone has heard that "90% of communication is nonverbal." I'm not going to repeat it here without at least a perfunctory Google search and what do you know, it's wrong. But still. A lot of communication is nonverbal, or at least, isn't in the words. The words we say mean entirely different things depending on how we say them . . . and that is why we miss stealth puns and subtle sarcasm and doubt and confidence and fear and hurt and love and pity and banter.

At least in books the author gives you the cues, tells us about what people's invisible faces look like, the grim set of their mouths and steely glints of their eyes, and gives tone to their inaudible voices, describing tremors and resolve. Things we could never get from text only.

And so, in written form, the things we say are even further detached from the things we mean than they usually are. Yeh, the spoken word can be taken the wrong way. But written word has so little indication of tone, that it has to be given some tone or another by the reader. And with no tone suggested, we default to our own, our own moods.

How much is lost I wonder?

I leaned back, looking at what I had written, and smiled. It was an odd smile. Not really a happy smile, more of a befuddled smile. Because I had had an idea.

Why, I wondered, not type everything like this? Unconventional, to be sure, but then, all new things are. And every improvement is necessarily a change . . .

Lightbulb What were you like as a child?
Posted by: moseylissa - 05-16-2017, 07:35 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (5)

Looking back at your childhood, what kinds of interests/activities did you pursue? What can you look back on now and see is representative of your INTPness?

I'm asking because the school system and the medical folks both believe my 8 year old INTP daughter belongs on the Autism Spectrum. I see the indicators they point to as a function of an underdeveloped INTP rather than on the spectrum, but I recognize my bias in this situation (being an INTP myself). She has also experienced major trauma (I was diagnosed with potentially terminal cancer when she was 6 but am doing fine now) - you know, just to complicate things.

So I'm looking for this tribe to help me see what's typical for INTP kids and see how that's different from or the same as what she's doing that leads people to believe she's Autistic.

  Need To Learn Something
Posted by: Yordle Sandwich - 04-13-2017, 11:38 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (12)

I spend too much time in school to learn anything, and that’s killing me.

Increasingly, I find it impossible to climb out of bed in the morning, knowing before I even begin that this will be another day wasted, that I’ll sit through class after class of nothing, nothing new or even nothing at all, nothing but noise, unbearably loud.

I used to spend my every unbooked moment learning, nothing could stop me from it, and I whiled away happy hours on the internet, learning history, and science, and epistemology.

Now I play mind-dead video games and laugh at unfunny comics and memes. I don’t have the energy to think.

This is death, this stupor, this fog, this mjollasses that my thoughts swim in, all to slow and all too late.

Where I used to dream, to plot and to plan, now I try to make it through the day without breaking.

I don’t like breaking.

I’m failing too many classes to pass tenth grade. I tried to try harder, but I couldn’t. I don’t know what compulsion keeps me rising and walking to the sound of the bells, each time a sweet relief from monotony that settles in again so quickly, so thoroughly, it seems that I’ll never live again, but that compulsion cannot force me to drag a pencil across a piece of paper, cannot force me to read the imbecilic instructions again, ad this time find meaning in them, so i turn in blank assessments.

Math class, it’s called. Where we learn math things. The noise, the noise is something deafening. It isn’t the volume of it, per se, though sometimes that too gets out of hand. It’s the stupidity of it all. Nothing that the teacher or a student says gets by without a chorus of mocking imitations and sneering laughter.

You’d have to be an idiot to raise your hand!

It’s too bad, because this is the best math teacher that many of these students will ever get. She takes the time to explain concepts to the hominids, the kavemen, despite the fact that most of them don’t listen at all, and that no one can hear her over the background noise of racist, sexist, and misanthropic jests.

So I close my mind to the noise, as best I can. There’s a trick to it, to disassociating. You just don’t think. I doodle absentmindedly on the margins of my paper, truly absentmindedly, because my mind is somewhere far away, very far away where I can’t hurt it.

I want to go on Khan Academy and catch up to my friend on math comprehension. I could do it in a month, easy. I did more over last summer without even wanting to. I want to read the LessWrong sequences, I want to watch the Feynman Lectures, to learn Bayesian logic matrixes and understand the mathematics behind the Game Theory of Economics, which received a Nobel prize some years back. I want to learn forensic environmental science, that sounds like a useful skill. I want to learn to play the violin, and learn to speak French.

I want to start a comic, and make some cashes. Pay my own keep.

I really want to learn quantum mechanics.

But I don’t have the time. All day every day I walk through hell, and it takes its toll.
All my energy goes to blocking out the noise, ignoring the teachers and ignoring the students and trying my hardest not to care about either. When I’m done, when I come home, I don’t have the strength left to think.

So the list of things that I want to do gets longer, and longer and longer, but I don’t have the energy to cross them off.

Question Religion
Posted by: Yordle Sandwich - 03-23-2017, 06:10 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (6)

"Yeah," I said, "The flat earth society really is a thing."
"But," asked my incredulous classmate, "That makes no sense! How do they explain all of the glaring inconsistencies?" (His and my words paraphrased.)

"They say that the whole world is accelerating upward at 9.8 meters per second, which accounts for gravity, and they say that the world is actually a disk with the North Pole in the center, people who think that they've sailed around the world have really only sailed in a circle around the North Pole. Apparently Antarctica is not a continent but an immense wall that keeps the oceans from spilling off the edge of the map . . . and no one has ever explored beyond it."

My classmate was, for the moment, exasperated beyond words. Finally he managed, "But what about the photographs from space?"

I shrugged. "Yeah, it's kind of stupid. I wasn't saying that it made sense, just that it existed." I paused for a moment and thought. "But, y'know, I bet it's just the foreignness of the ideas that make them seem so incredible. I mean, there are mainstream christian denominations that are still saying that evolution isn't a thing."

A different classmate in the vicinity piped up. "Well, evolution is definitely happening, humans are getting taller. But I don't, like, believe that we're descended from monkeys."

I felt a kind of dread coming over me. I remembered, vividly, being shouted at by four or five members of my Bio class earlier in the year. By Moloch's sacrificial brazier, why hadn't I remembered that I lived in the American West, and not on the parts of the internet I frequent where the people are all sane?
"I had thought," I murmured, bone weary already because I knew where this was going to go, "that this was a non-issue."

The conversation turned to the book of Genesis. According to it, God made Adam out of dirt. If I was faster on my feet, I would of pointed out that the story could not possibly be literally true because in two generations all of humanity would have an inbreeding coefficient of 25 percent. Instead, I asked why prokaryotic life evolving into complex lifeforms went against the Bible, being made out of the earth could be meant metaphorically.

Apparently the Bible is innerant. I hadn't heard.

So I decided to pull up a verse of scripture on the computer in front of me. I chose Numbers 31, verses 14-18, because that scripture is a particular favorite of mine. I chose to go with the King James Version, for added officiality.

At this point a girl who had evidently been listening in on our conversation moved over to our table, and, hovering over our shoulders, demanded that we use "The Common English Bible."

That worked for me too. So I read:

14 Moses became angry with the commanders of the army, the officers of thousands and the officers of hundreds, who came back from the battle. 15 Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live? 16 These very women, on Balaam's advice, made the Israelites break faith with the LORD in the affair at Peor, so there was a plague among the LORD's community. 17 Now kill every male child and every female who has known a man intimately by sleeping with him. 18 But all the young girls who have not known a man intimately by sleeping with him, spare for yourselves.

To which she said that I had to read the chapter leading up to it, for context, that I was quoting scripture out of context, and I asked her in what context it is OK to murder babies and rape little girls. She didn't stick around to hear the chapter leading up to the quoted section.

I'm surrounded by people who make excuses for murderers and human traffickers, because their parents did and their parents did before them. And they want their excuses to be heard in the schools.

There was a bill proposed in this fine state of Idaho that proposed to tighten the exceptions in our child abuse, willful neglect, and manslaughter laws for religious reasons, not close the exceptions, mind you, just tighten them, and it was not passed.

Baal and Camozotz, I hate everything.

  Struggle of Independence
Posted by: Darrien - 12-20-2016, 06:29 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (2)

There are days I spend sitting around, thinking about how confused I am about all of life. I try so desperately to understand the entire world, yet I feel no one ever understands me. To let someone in seems like the only relief but... my independence says I can do this alone. That letting anyone in would bias me opinions due to how ignorant and irrational everyone is. It tears me apart that I can sit with my family and feel they judge me though they know nothing about me. That despite how long I have been with them they still think of me as lesser. My emotions are naive but my mind is so sharp, capable of analyzing everything from any possible angle. It always seems I am destine to understand but never be understood. I don't want to be anyone else in this life. I almost envy all the other MBTIs who live life without having to always question everything. I will not let others judge me for who I am, the storm inside could rip this world apart and anyone who tries to step into it. I stand at the center of it and it will be here I learn to control it and understand it. At the stake of everything. Truth will always be more valuable.

Interest for a D&D (Pathfinder) Game
Posted by: Yordle Sandwich - 11-24-2016, 05:43 AM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (15)

It would not be a stretch to say that dungeons and dragons is the singal most impactful game in the history of humanity. Fantasy tropes we take for granted found their genesis in this tabletop. Druids as nature mages, rangers as using bows, the concept of a cleric (or, in video games today, the clad is usually dubbed priest) who channels magic powers and heals. Wizard's as needing spellbooks, kobolds as what they are in gaming, undead as a staple enemy, and many spells (fireball, chain lightning, animate dead, to name three I used in skyrim a moment ago) owe their existence to D&D.
I have three key arguments as to why good pen and paper are better than modern video games.
One: Even the best, most sandbox-y games can't do more than offer you a predetermined set of options. In a tabletop rpg you can do whatever you want. Simply tell the Game Master what you plan to do, and I'll provide the rules you need to do it. The rules are flexible enough to apply to any number of potential actions. Want to break your way through a wall with magic or a sword? Doable. Wondering if you can cut arrow slits in the door and fire through them? Doable. Wondering if you can chew off someone's arm and then use it as a weapon? .....if you really want to....
Stories thrive on unconventional solutions.

Two: You have room for real creativity. You're encouraged to "play your character," instead of being an avatar that completes quests, you are a character as multi faceted as you desire. You aren't hero McHeroface who follows the games story like an automaton and who's dialogue was written by someone else. You're working with the other PCs (a term coined by D&D) to create a story. You design the protagonist, everything from his/her personality to abilities, and then you protagonize in the Game Master's world.
Three. There is a reason that this thread is under "Isolation Overdose." Intps, we have a hard time making friends. And while conversation is wonderful, friends are often friends because they do stuff together. This is a chance to see...hear...no, see, unless we're reading aloud...each other in a more natural setting. To make funny jokes because the situation calls for it. To laugh and banter and have fun. That's not something you can get out of even the best video game or book.
If you don't know the rules, that's okay, you don't really need to if your not GMing. (Game Mastering.) If you want to learn the rules I'll help you, if you don't, you can leave all the crunch in my hands.
Ideally, I'd like at least 3 players. The more the merrier, though. And I'll probably start the game even if it's just me talking to myself. I'm bored and depressed.
So. I've orated my best. What do you say? I don't have all the details hashed out, I'll figure that out with the PCs. But if you have an interest in playing with us, post below.

Star Here is Practical Explanation about Next Life, Purpose of Human Life,
Posted by: relu - 10-31-2016, 01:15 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (4)

Practical Explanation ( For Example ) :- `1st of all can you tell me every single seconds detail from that time when you born ?? ( i need every seconds detail ?? that what- what you have thought and done on every single second )

can you tell me every single detail of your `1 cheapest Minute Or your whole hour, day, week, month, year or your whole life ??

if you are not able to tell me about this life then what proof do you have that you didn't forget your past ? and that you will not forget this present life in the future ?

that is Fact that Supreme Lord Krishna exists but we posses no such intelligence to understand him.
there is also next life. and i already proved you that no scientist, no politician, no so-called intelligent man in this world is able to understand this Truth. cuz they are imagining. and you cannot imagine what is god, who is god, what is after life etc.
for example :Your father existed before your birth. you cannot say that before your birth your father don,t exists.

So you have to ask from mother, "Who is my father?" And if she says, "This gentleman is your father," then it is all right. It is easy.
Otherwise, if you makes research, "Who is my father?" go on searching for life; you'll never find your father.

( now maybe...maybe you will say that i will search my father from D.N.A, or i will prove it by photo's, or many other thing's which i will get from my mother and prove it that who is my Real father.{ So you have to believe the authority. who is that authority ? she is your mother. you cannot claim of any photo's, D.N.A or many other things without authority ( or ur mother ).

if you will show D.N.A, photo's, and many other proofs from other women then your mother. then what is use of those proofs ??} )

same you have to follow real authority. "Whatever You have spoken, I accept it," Then there is no difficulty. And You are accepted by Devala, Narada, Vyasa, and You are speaking Yourself, and later on, all the acaryas have accepted. Then I'll follow.
I'll have to follow great personalities. The same reason mother says, this gentleman is my father. That's all. Finish business. Where is the necessity of making research? All authorities accept Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. You accept it; then your searching after God is finished.

Why should you waste your time?
all that is you need is to hear from authority ( same like mother ). and i heard this truth from authority " Srila Prabhupada " he is my spiritual master.
im not talking these all things from my own.

in this world no `1 can be Peace full. this is all along Fact.

cuz we all are suffering in this world 4 Problems which are Disease, Old age, Death, and Birth after Birth.

tell me are you really happy ?? you can,t be happy if you will ignore these 4 main problem. then still you will be Forced by Nature.

if you really want to be happy then follow these 6 Things which are No illicit sex, No gambling, No drugs ( No tea & coffee ), No meat-eating ( No onion & garlic's )

5th thing is whatever you eat `1st offer it to Supreme Lord Krishna. ( if you know it what is Guru parama-para then offer them food not direct Supreme Lord Krishna )

and 6th " Main Thing " is you have to Chant " hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare ".
If your not able to follow these 4 things no illicit sex, no gambling, no drugs, no meat-eating then don,t worry but chanting of this holy name ( Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra ) is very-very and very important.

Chant " hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare " and be happy.

if you still don,t believe on me then chant any other name for 5 Min's and chant this holy name for 5 Min's and you will see effect. i promise you it works And chanting at least 16 rounds ( each round of 108 beads ) of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra daily.
Here is no Question of Holy Books quotes, Personal Experiences, Faith or Belief. i accept that Sometimes Faith is also Blind. Here is already Practical explanation which already proved that every`1 else in this world is nothing more then Busy Foolish and totally idiot.
every `1 is already Blind in this world and if you will follow another Blind then you both will fall in hole. so try to follow that person who have Spiritual Eyes who can Guide you on Actual Right Path. ( my Authority & Guide is my Spiritual Master " Srila Prabhupada " )
if you want to see Actual Purpose of human life then see this link : ( http://www.asitis.com {Bookmark it })
read it complete. ( i promise only readers of this book that they { he/she } will get every single answer which they want to know about why im in this material world, who im, what will happen after this life, what is best thing which will make Human Life Perfect, and what is perfection of Human Life. ) purpose of human life is not to live like animal cuz every`1 at present time doing 4 thing which are sleeping, eating, sex & fear. purpose of human life is to become freed from Birth after birth, Old Age, Disease, and Death.

  Popular happiness books, MOOCs, etc.?
Posted by: obstreperous - 09-30-2016, 02:14 PM - Forum: Isolation Overdose - Help!! - Replies (10)

I've been taking a look at some MOOCs about how to build a "happier" life, but they leave me as flat as almost every other popular book about happiness. I often feel as though they're coming from a perspective that doesn't make any sense except in the most superficial ways: looking at the world and people in terms of bad or good, avoiding thinking certain thoughts, value judgments that are assumed and not explained, "taking responsibility" (doing your duty based on... what?), not explaining the rationale for certain bits of advice (why their advice will work) or not doing it thoroughly enough for me to accept it. Sometimes there are a couple good points, but generally, I just feel more alienated by this style.

Worse, I feel that they are already preparing themselves to go out-of-date since we're probably going to start interconnecting our minds more and more in the future. I'm not sure we'll always be able to maintain harmony by avoiding each others' perspectives by not looking at each other, thinking anything or saying anything, as the advice often goes. Also, their advice is mainly dependent on the highly debatable concept of free will.

For me, reading philosophy sometimes helps, but there's often a divide between practical reality and theory.

What is some of the media you consume when you feel like you want to figure out how to "be happy?" Or do you try other, more practical things to achieve this?
